San Salvador sits at around 680 metres above sea level in El Salvador's central highlands, which gives it a climate that feels noticeably gentler than the coastal lowlands many visitors expect from Central America. The city runs on two seasons that couldn't be more different from each other: a dry season that stretches roughly from November through April, and a wet season that dominates May through October. Within that broad pattern, though, there's real texture worth understanding before you pack your bag. During the dry season, San Salvador earns its nickname of the "Land of Eternal Spring" with more credibility than most tourist-office slogans deserve. Temperatures hover in a comfortable range, nights can turn cool, between December and February when lows can dip to around 17°C (63°F), and the sky tends to stay clear for days at a stretch. The landscape dries out and browns off a little by March and April, when the heat builds toward its annual peak at around 33°C (91°F), but the lack of humidity keeps things from feeling oppressive. February and March are the sunniest months of the year, when you'd swear the city is showing off. The wet season shift is dramatic and, once you know what to expect, rather impressive. Rain arrives in May and intensifies through September and into early October, September is typically the wettest month, with rainfall totals that can reach over 330mm across the month. These aren't gentle drizzles. San Salvador's rainy season delivers afternoon and evening downpours that last an hour or two, then clear. Mornings are usually fine. Temperatures ease off a little during the peak wet months, with highs settling around 29°C to 30°C (84°F to 86°F), so the rain comes with a modest cooling dividend. The landscape turns intensely green, waterfalls run full, and the volcanic peaks around the city emerge into sharper relief between storms.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Beach and relaxation
The dry season months of December through February are your clearest bet. Coastal areas near San Salvador are at their most accessible and reliable, humidity stays manageable, and you won't be watching the sky nervously every afternoon.
Cultural exploration
November through January threads a useful needle: the rains have wound down, the city is at its most active with festivals and outdoor events, and the cooler evenings make long days of walking and eating your way around San Salvador enjoyable rather than draining.
Adventure and hiking
The May-to-June window tends to reward the flexible traveler. The volcanoes around San Salvador, including the Boqueron crater at Santa Ana, are dramatically green and often mist-shrouded, and trails aren't yet waterlogged as they become later in the season. You'll need a rain jacket. But the scenery is worth it.
Budget travel
The wet season core of July through September is worth considering seriously. San Salvador sees fewer international visitors during these months, accommodation tends to have more availability, and the daily rainfall pattern (afternoons and evenings, not all day) leaves plenty of usable time. The city doesn't shut down. Locals simply build rain into their schedule.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for San Salvador.

Year-Round Essentials
high-SPF sunscreen
Since the UV index is strong at this latitude regardless of season and cloud cover doesn't neutralise it.
reusable water bottle
given the heat and the activity levels most visitors maintain.
lightweight day bag with a rain cover or a packable rain poncho
Belongs in your bag every month of the year, even during the dry season, the odd shower can appear.
small microfibre towel
more useful than it sounds in a warm climate.
comfortable walking shoes with real grip
San Salvador's streets and the surrounding volcanic trails reward footwear that can handle both urban pavements and unpaved paths.
power bank
a practical addition given long days of navigation and photography.
dry season (November through April)
Clothing
lightweight clothing - linen or breathable synthetics
Footwear
Sandals work for casual city days. But bring at least one pair of closed-toe shoes for volcanic hikes and rougher terrain.
Layering Tip
Evenings between December and February can call for a light layer or cardigan, at elevation and in air-conditioned restaurants.
wet season (May through October)
Clothing
quick-dry clothing
Footwear
Waterproof sandals or shoes that drain are worth packing alongside a compact umbrella, ponchos cover you but don't help much with wet feet on flooded pavements.
Accessories
compact umbrella
Layering Tip
A light breathable rain jacket is more useful than a heavy waterproof because the rain stops and the heat returns quickly, and you don't want to be steaming inside a sealed jacket.
Plug Type
Type An and Type B
Voltage
120V and 60Hz
Adapter Note
If you're coming from Europe, the UK, or Australia, you'll need an adapter and possibly a voltage converter for any devices not rated for dual voltage.
Skip These Items
a heavy winter jacket (even December nights in San Salvador don't require one) Expensive or elaborate camera equipment without proper weatherproofing if you're traveling during the wet season any footwear that takes days to dry formal dress shoes that can't handle the occasional unexpected downpour A large wheeled suitcase is more hindrance than help for anyone planning to move around El Salvador's varied terrain; a mid-sized backpack or duffel tends to serve travelers to San Salvador considerably better.
